A Sterling Silver necklace with engraved ships, navigational instruments and layered translucent enamel in handmade silver frames. This piece was made for the 'Tresor' exhibition and was based on a Scrimshaw piece in the museum collection that depicted a ship at sail. I became interested in the Packet ships that were referred to in the museum collection also, running out of Falmouth and acting essentially as the internet of the time as they carried almost exclusively communication and routinely sailed as far as Rio. This piece is a mixture of different enameled ships (and a compass) in silver frames. They are deliberately slightly distortive and ghostly. They are interspersed with different pieces of navigational equipment- Sextent, barometer, binoculars, graphometer as this was the tech of the time. the names of some of the ships are also engraved on hanging pieces and some on the back of the enamelled pieces- Francis Freeling, Seagull, Swift, Antelope, Spanish Allyance, Spanish Expedition, Ann Teresa. I found it interesting that the ships were an assortment  of wild life names, peoples names and political alliance names. Oh- and there's a crown motif too. For my Collection at Tresor I segued from Scrimshaw to sailing to wrecks to fishing and the end work kind of covered all of that route. Ive been very taken with the ship and the compass as central motifs for 2025.
 
The chain thick and strong and the necklace closes with a handmade clasp with multiple closure loops for adjustment so that it can be worn to suit different necklines. Full length is 51cm with the ability to adjust down at every few mm to 43.5cm
